Professor of Organization, Strategy and Leadership co-writes essay in Stanford Social Innovation Review, summarising lessons from German hackathons.
Hertie School Professor of Organization, Strategy and Leadership Johanna Mair has spent over a year observing German hackathons to tackel the COVID-19 pandemic. Working alongside fellow researcher Thomas Gegenhuber, Assistant Professor of Digital Transformation at Leuphana University Lüneburg, she studied the #WirVsVirus and #UpdateDeutschland initiatives.
Now, the pair have published major takeaways from their research in the magazine Stanford Social Innovation Review. One key message they have for readers is that gathering a large number of ideas in hackathons is just the first step.
"The road to impact needs more than new ideas. It requires combining innovation and scaling," the authors suggest.
